I am sure, we all agree to ” Better safe than Sorry”! However, It isn’t the case always. I hope you too agree that sometimes things are beyond our control that accidents do happen. I am sure everyone of us try our best to educate our children at very early years about Health and Safety but learning something through fun always has a huge impact and remembered by children a long way.
Here are some interesting methods to help your children learn about Health and Safety
Learn through Play:
Let them explore the environment, Never tie your children’s curiosity about learning something new. A child can never learn to ride a bike if you don’t take the risk of letting them go without them knowing it.
“Be with them, Watch them, Guide them, Explore with them and teach them what could be the risks and how to protect themselves.”
Estimate the Risk involved in each activity the child explores:
As a parent and an experienced person, I am sure we are capable of estimating the risk involved in every activity a child gets invloved. Do you think it is bit too much for their age to go on a roller coaster? Is your mind telling you to wait for few more months before nodding your head for an Yes!?
Then Wait, No one can teach and understand our children better than us, talk to them kindly and politely explain why it could be of too much risk and give them assurance that you will surely let them try it when they are ready for it.
Observe the environment for safety measures
Even if it is your local park, do you something new in there!? Take a few minutes to observe the changes and how well it is done before letting your child. Something good for the other children may not be the right one for your child and you are the best judge!
Protect your home with basic safety – Child Proof your home:
Most of us don’t live in a joint family now. So there are hardly any elders watching the kids 24 hours and while we are busy, the child might get him busy in something else that he is attracted to. Child proofing your home as much as you can will definitely give you some peace of mind. Invest in Bed rails, Stair gates, locks for kitchen cabinets, safety plug for sockets etc. You don’t have to buy them all new, try getting them second hand and keep an eye on free recycling sites.
In all the situations, Talk to your child about the risks involved and how they can prevent accidents.
To encourage children, Accident advice helpline is hosting a Health and Safety Poster competition and inviting all the children under the age of 16 to create a poster highlighting anything to do with health and safety and how accidents can be prevented.
