If you are someone who loves fantasy and magic, You wouldn’t have missed reading “A Discovery of Witches”, by Deborah Harkness, who also have spread her magic on “Shadow of Night” and ” The Book of Life”
A Discovery of Witches is a richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.
If you haven’t read the book before, here is the plot:
Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemy manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery, so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks, but her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries–and she’s the only creature who can break its spell.
How exciting would it be to meet one of your favourite authors, get the book signed by her and also be invited to the exclusive screening of the book being made into a TV Series! This all happened in just one evening for me at Oxford, the place where the story is built on!
This TV series airs in the UK on Sky One, Sky One HD and Now TV on September 14th at 9pm.
The event started with finding out if within me lives a Vampire, a Witch, a Demon or a Human! It was a simple DNA test on the mouth swab followed by a personality test at a pop up science lab at Waterstones, and it turned out to be a “Witch” within me! (Which I really loved and got excited about)
We then walked down the street to Ashmolean Spellbound Exhibition on Beaumont Street, where you could find a collection of eight centuries of magical objects!!!! It was creepy and spooky! A perfect place to visit during Halloween time!
We had a private tour of the museum and have the privilege to see some of the accessories that have been used in the TV Series and also the rarest collection of all the spooky objects! I definitely has goosebumps while reading many of the description under the collections! It was an immense collection of historical evidence of alchemy.
Although I Love fantasy and magic, have never believed in Witch Craft but the tour around the museum definitely disturbed my thoughts and made me believe that the Witch craft was definitely practised over centuries! It was unbelievable when I read how the Witches have been repelled in the community and executed! The voodoo dolls, the spell books and the weighing scale was definitely very spooky!
We then headed to the screening room for the advanced screening of the first episode of “A Discovery of Witches” with popcorn, ofcourse! After a short speech from the Author Deborah Harkness, and the lead actress Teresa Palmer, the screening started which was about to be an hour but I never realised it is already been an hour when the screening finished. The book was just carried so mesmerisingly on the screen!
The actors just played the role perfectly and drags your 100% attention into the screen!
We then got the book signed by the Author and headed home carrying the magic in heart!
A Discovery of Witches TV series will be aired in UK on Sky One and Sky One HD at 9pm on Friday September 14th 2018.
If you don’t have Sky TV you can watch it on NOW TV. Why not make use of the one month free trial from NOW TV and enjoy the series!? I am sure you will love it!
Disclosure: I was invited to the Sky One A Discovery of Witches special screening in Oxford held at Waterstones and the Ashmolean museum and was paid a fee for sharing my thoughts about the Series. All opinions are her own.
